G L I M M E R, by Warren Berger, will be published by The Penguin Press in 2009. Separately, it will be published in Canada and Europe by Random House.
Pegged as a mainstream, mass-market book on design, G L I M M E R will discuss and explain the subject in an accessible manner, while also taking readers inside the studios of a number of cutting-edge designers to reveal how they think and show their creative processes at work. The book analyzes the design principles of Bruce Mau (pictured above left), while also featuring other top designers such as Yves Behar, Brian Collins, Paula Scher, Dean Kamen, Stefan Sagmeister, and many others.
Design is going through an important evolution right now. Many people still tend to think of it primarily in terms of “style”: fashionable handbags and elegant coffeetables. But G L I M M E R focuses on the potential of design to solve problems not ordinarily associated with design. It looks at how designers are involved in tackling profound issues involving poverty, the environment, education, and healthcare. At the same time, the book examines the role of design in helping today’s businesses to survive and thrive in the face of unprecedented competition and environmental challenges.
G L I M M E R will open up the world of design for a wide audience—targeted not only to business readers, but also those wishing to apply design principles to their personal lifestyles and identities. The book also introduces readers to a number of surprising, inspirational design possibilities that are emerging around the world today.
Ultimately, design is about infinite possibilities: The “glimmer” in the title refers, in part, to the glimmer of hope. This book puts forth the proposition that through better design, almost anything is possible—even in the face of today’s dire and threatening “inconvenient truths.”

“Design is the glimmer in God’s eye.”
